Experience in an eCommerce environment is a plus.
What's in It for You
High impact -- if you thrive on the challenge of rolling up your sleeves, digging in, and making a good thing even better, this is the role for you. As a smaller company we have very little bureaucracy and minimal politics, meaning not only that decisions are made quickly, but also that we are wide open to your ideas. You'll find a highly creative and driven team at Kink.com.
Career development -- we're growing, and you'll help us grow more smoothly and strategically. This is an awesome opportunity for you to develop your career in Accounting and Finance.
Great work environment -- great people are the heart of our success, and we take a proactive approach to looking for ways to show our appreciation, such as providing training and development opportunities. Most employees work 10 AM to 6 PM, although we are open to some variation on those hours. We rarely work more than eight hours a day; of course, as a finance/accounting professional you understand that longer may be required from time to time. Kink.com recently purchased the San Francisco Armory, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, and our offices and studios are in this unique 200,000 sq. ft. space in the Mission District, one block from BART.
Unique vision -- Kink.com was started in 1997 by bondage enthusiast Peter Acworth, who was then a PhD student. After realizing consensual BDSM games were more exciting than finance, he left academia to devote his life to subjecting beautiful, willing women to strict bondage. The result was Hogtied.com, Kink's first site. Kink now hosts 11 unique sites dedicated to a wide variety of fetishes, and produces original content.
Excellent compensation -- in order to attract and retain top talent Kink.com offers a competitive salary, bonus incentive program, and a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision plans at zero cost to the employee; a 401(k) plan with generous company match; flexible spending accounts for health care, child care, and commuting; and more. In addition to three weeks of paid vacation, Kink takes a holiday break between Christmas and New Years and employees are paid during this time, we observe several paid federal holidays, and offer a generous allowance of paid sick time; in fact, all told, we offer five weeks of paid time off.
Working at Kink.com, AKA Cybernet Entertainment
While Kink.com is in an unusual industry, we operate the same way most typical businesses do. In fact, you'll even see some stereotypical personalities in various departments -- dot.com type geeks in IT, no-nonsense business types in Accounting, and so on. We also comply with the letter and spirit of the law regarding sexual harassment. Some characteristics that might surprise you:
Kink.com is an equal opportunities employer. Our 90+ employees include 40% women, a diverse mix of communities of color, and a strong representation from the LGBTQQ communities.
Employees are well paid and receive full benefits: health, dental, vision and employer matched 401(k).
Kink.com usually hires production staff at the entry level and provides a career path with training.
Kink.com has an unusually low turnover of employees.
Our mission is to demystify and celebrate alternative sexualities by providing the most ethical and authentic kinky adult entertainment. To make sure you are comfortable with our content, we urge you to look at all our websites, starting at Kink.com. In particular, have a look at BehindKink.com, where we demystify Kink.com, including the 10th anniversary documentary in which employees discuss their experience here. You'll also get a glimpse into life at Kink.com, along with a discussion of how careers in the adult entertainment industry have become increasingly mainstream, by reading "A Disciplined Business" at www.NewYorkTimes.com.
We are proud of who we are, what we do, and how we do it, and we'll expect you, too, to promote our business.
More About Your Role
You will provide leadership to an Accounting Clerk (who handles payroll) and an AP/AR Clerk. Both of these professionals have been with us at least a year and, while we have processes and procedures in place for accounting and finance, our ongoing growth requires that we re-assess this functional area and create a more robust and scalable structure around it.
Several initiatives to support this objective are under way, and you'll assume ownership of them. In addition, we'll welcome your recommendations for further strengthening this area; in fact, we'll look to you to "dive into" the books and identify opportunities for streamlining processes. Current initiatives include creating general ledger reports for department heads, forecasting, running separate P&Ls for each of our 12 (and growing) websites, and more. Budgeting will be an important focus, and you'll work closely with the CEO and department heads to implement a more formalized process for establishing and managing budgets.
More specifically, your activities will include:
Overseeing day-to-day operations of the accounting department.
Working with our external CPA firm to assist in the completion of our annual tax return.
Working with executives to create the annual budget.
Creating financial reports for the executives.
Overseeing the development of financial accounting systems required to maintain reporting requirements.
Selecting, developing, and evaluating personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
Developing corporate and/or organizational policies and authorizing their implementation.
Providing direction to senior managers in various areas, groups, and/or operations.
Keys to Success
To excel in this role you will take a hands-on approach, balancing the need to keep daily operations moving forward with the need to implement changes. You also will need to be numbers-driven, and assume the role of in-house subject matter expert in accounting and finance. We invite open and candid conversation so that we can learn from one another, and you'll need to be a "go-getter," willing to engage actively in these conversations.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
