In this very unique role you will work with the latest technology and help develop a variety of features and platforms, from an all-new social platform to an entirely rebuilt internal workflow application. While we are highly profitable and support six million unique visitors each month, we also are a small, creative company in which individuals can make a difference, and we offer flexible schedules and work/life balance. Our development process is set up so that you will be productive in short order. Engineers definitely get to be engineers at Kink.com, but there are also opportunities for career advancement if you have the ambition and aptitude.
We are looking for an Engineer with solid web development experience and strong Java skills, including experience with Hibernate or other ORM software, familiarity with JSP, and working knowledge of EJB (we use EJB3). To be a good fit for this opportunity you will truly enjoy building well-designed and implemented software, and you will be a generalist -- our developers currently work in all areas of the application stack (database, services, UI, etc.). While Kink.com maintains a highly professional atmosphere, you must be comfortable working in an adult entertainment industry environment.
Kink.com, the premiere producer of adult media, is expanding operations. This is a chance to work with a creative group of fun people utilizing the latest and greatest technology to push the envelope. Kink.com offers a competitive compensation package that includes, among other benefits, medical, dental, and a company-matching 401(k) plan.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
What's in It for You
High impact -- as a smaller company we have very little bureaucracy and minimal politics, meaning not only that decisions are made quickly, but also that we are wide open to your ideas. In fact, recently one of our engineers proposed an idea for a new feature, we refined it through group discussions, and we'll take it live shortly.
Great work environment -- most employees work 10 AM to 6 PM, although we are open to some variation on those hours. We rarely work more than eight hours a day. Kink.com recently purchased the San Francisco Armory, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, and our offices and studios are in this unique 200,000 sq. ft. space in the Mission District.
Career development -- you'll keep your skills sharp, as we are using the most current technology. Rather than maintaining legacy, you'll help replace it. All of our engineers contribute to all aspects of web development, providing you with a "big picture" understanding of our architecture. You'll also help us transition to an agile SDLC and expand our Java architecture.
We value our people -- great people are the heart of our success, and we take a proactive approach to looking for ways to show our appreciation, such as providing training and development opportunities.
Unique vision -- Kink.com was started in 1997 by bondage enthusiast Peter Acworth, who was then a PhD student. After realizing consensual BDSM games were more exciting than finance, he left academia to devote his life to subjecting beautiful, willing women to strict bondage. The result was Hogtied.com, Kink's first site. Kink now hosts 11 unique sites dedicated to a wide variety of fetishes, and produces original content.
Excellent compensation -- in order to attract and retain top talent Kink.com offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision plans at zero cost to the employee; a 401(k) plan with generous company match; flexible spending accounts for health care, child care, and commuting; and more. In addition to three weeks of paid vacation, Kink takes a holiday break between Christmas and New Years and employees are paid during this time, we observe several paid federal holidays, and offer a generous allowance of paid sick time; in fact, all told, we offer five weeks of paid time off.
Working at Kink.com, AKA Cybernet Entertainment
While Kink.com is in an unusual industry, we operate the same way most typical businesses do. In fact, you'll even see some stereotypical personalities in various departments -- dot.com type geeks in IT, no-nonsense business types in Accounting, and so on. We also comply with the letter and spirit of the law regarding sexual harassment. Some characteristics that might surprise you:
We are proud of who we are, what we do, and how we do it, and we'll expect you, too, to promote our business.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
Reporting to our Senior Engineering Manager/Architect, you'll join a Development team that includes a PHP Specialist who maintains internal code for our publishing workflow, three Java Engineers developing for our external sites, and an HTML/CSS Developer who handles formatting. You can develop on a Mac or PC, and we try to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible. Java is our base language, our database is MySQL, we use JBoss as our application server, and our persistence engine is based on JPA/Hibernate.
As you might imagine, there is always plenty to do, and Engineers typically take the next project in the stack (we're all generalists). A project may last two to three weeks. Some projects in the works:
Keys to Success
To excel in this role you will be smart and conscientious, taking pride in doing things the right way, such as keeping the code base clean. While you'll invest the majority of your time as an individual contributor, you'll also have a collaborative, team player approach to sharing insights and solutions. You'll be proactive about keeping your skills up to date and pragmatic about what tools and methods get used in production.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
